Alkalising foods for healing from the inside.

Our bodies need to maintain a pH of between 7.35 and 7.45 in the blood to remain healthy. This is one of the most critical processes that maintain homeostasis (meaning the delicate balances within the body, that are constantly being tweaked and corrected as they are necessary to stay alive!).

Our incredible, perfectly evolved bodies; self contained, self-healing machines that function without instruction from our own consciousness, have many complex systems to keep things at optimal levels for survival - aka; homeostasis. Our detoxification systems, which include the lungs, liver, kidneys, lymphatic and immune systems work tirelessly to protect us from harm, every single second of our lives. But the evolution of the human body largely slowed down thousands of years ago, so our detox systems are not equipped to handle the synthetic chemicals, metal contaminants, pollution, and synthetic body fuels (food!) that modern (wo)man are subjected to every day. The presence of these particles disrupt the pH of the blood, causing acidity to dominate.

Our elimination systems can deal with some of the contaminants that we face, and by adding alkalising foods into our diets, we can help the process along. What is left behind gets moved out of the way of the major organs, and deposited into places like small joints, the heels and spine as calcified minerals that can cause a lot of pain. When not eliminated totally, these deposits can come back to wreak havoc in advancing years, so working harder to keep yourself healthy when you are younger is very wise

Cardiovascular disease is triggered by the presence of extra calcium in the blood that is hiding these substances (acids) that shouldn't be there. Acid particles moving around in the blood circulation in this way can scratch and pitt the arterial walls, making surfaces easier to adhere to, leading to plaque build ups and in turn, high blood pressure and heart disease.

We now know that cancer cells thrive in an Acidic environment. Autoimmune diseases often stem from a pH imbalance. Many conditions are either caused by, or are exacerbated by an acidic body environment, and studies now show that alkalising the body can help to heal these conditions.

There are many clinical studies and journal articles that discuss this at length - you can check one out Here

So what are we eating that can cause acidity? In short...everything! Well, not quite.

Unfortunately, acid-forming foods - that is substances that may not seem acidic outside the body, but once ingested cause acids to form in the body - are very common.

All meats and cheeses, rices and wheat, cornmeal, oats, rye, spelt and bran, breads, most legumes/beans unless sprouted (which makes them alkalising), most nuts (although fresh coconut is alkalising

Alcohol, soft drinks, caffeinated drinks, sweeteners - both artificial and natural - tobacco and basically every drug are acid-forming.

Tricky to navigate with the modern western diet, I know.

Keeping these foods and beverages to a minimum is ideal, but also including plenty of things off the alkalising list every day will help to reduce acidity as you go along!

The good news is that Alkalising foods have almost as an extensive list, which includes but is not limited to;

Pretty much all fruits and vegetables - (blueberries, plums, prunes and cranberries are acid forming :( )even citrus fruits are alkalising in the body. Beans, peas, potatoes, flax, millet, quinoa, amaranth grains, chestnuts, almonds and fresh coconut, sprouted seeds,

eggs, yoghurt, milk and cream, raw unpasturised honey, most herbs and spices, herbal teas, vegetable and fruit juices, unprocessed cold-pressed oils.

SO, there we have yet another reason to include fruits and vegetables in your diet every day. Not only are they packed with vitamins and minerals, but they also help to reduce the acids that are floating around in your body, just waiting to do unpleasant things to your health in the future.

There are other things you can add into your daily routine that will help to reduce acidity, such as drinking alkaline water - you can get filters that alkalise your water as you go. There are mineral based supplements and powders that you can take each day that will help to alkalise your blood, reducing acids and the symptoms they may already be causing which could include, headaches, sleeplessness, lightheadedness, nausea, muscle twitching and other symptoms - all of which could of course be caused by other conditions so it is always wise to have them checked out by a professional.

Essentially, all of the things that you know are not good for you, have a myriad of reasons why they are not good for you, and just one of them is the acids they cause to build up in your body. However, there are also things on the acid-forming list that you wouldn't normally associate with poor health such as nuts, legumes and some of the grains, so my suggestion is to try and accompany their consumption with alkalising foods, to keep the balance.

Its a complicated issue, while at the same time being very simple. If you are having difficulty getting your head around this and would like to talk about it further, please get in touch with me, or you can book a consultation via the same link.
